SSDM was engaged in late 2010 to carry out an assessment of the drainage performance and soil physical condition of the Basin Reserve outfield. The assessment included using SSDM's Field Quality Audit system, carrying out an infiltration study of the outfield and making laboratory measurements of the soil physical properties of the profile. Supplementary rainfall data and comaprisons with other similar parks were also presented. The purpose of the study was to assess the capability of the outfield to sustain rugby training on the ground during the winter and to provide a starting point to upgrade the outfield with a comprehensive sand-based drainage system.

SSDM also carries out cricket pitch sampling at the Basin Reserve and Westpac Stadium.
