Onewa Domain Sports Grounds
SSDM was commissioned between 2006 and 2009 to assess the condition of the No. 1 field and prepare a design solution to upgrade the facility as a major training venue for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
The work involved preparing surface renewal, drainage and irrigation upgrade specifications as well as compiling resource and building consent applications.
The No. 1 field used a sand carpet approach for the upgrade which had to take into account the different requirements of the athletics and rugby clubs domiciled at the venue. The field was established with a new seeded turf-type kikuyu which was later transitioned with a winter active ryegrass. Since completion of the redesign and upgrade work, the venue has been highly praised by Rugby World Cup visiting teams as an outstanding training pitch.
