GEO Evaluation of Auckland Council Golf Courses
Project: Auckland Council - GEO Certification of Council Golf Courses
Client: Auckland Council
SSDM were engaged by Auckland Council to carry out an Ecological Appraisal of all of the golf courses in the Auckland region currently operating on Council leased land.
As part of the development of the Golf Facilities Investment Plan, Auckland Council requested that all golf club soperating on leased Council land should achieve certification by the Golf Environment Organisation (GEO). This is an internationally recognised eco-label awarded to golf clubs committed to sustainable operational practices.
The main benefit of the GEO certification being to demonstrate to members, visitors and the wider community that your club is environmentally sustainable. This would provide a good platform for publicity and international experience shows that this helps attract new members and greenfee players.
In addition, GEO certification enables council to demonstrate that all its clubs employ good practice in ecosystem management and biodiversity. This will become a key component of the Golf Facilities Investment Plan.
GEO Certification Process
The five stages to the certification process include:
Stage 1: Initial meeting with club stakeholders and data capture
Stage 2: Assessment of site-by-site factors and prioritisation of work
Stage 3: Progression of the programme
Stage 4: Resolution of any outstanding issues and final check off prior to submission
Stage 5: Submission of online profile and organisation of independent site verification
